Delany, James P, PhD, BS
Overview
overview
- James P. DeLay, Ph.D. is a Senior Investigator at the Translational Research Institute. He earned his doctoral degree from The Ohio State University in 1986 followed by postdoctoral training with Dr. Schoeller in the doubly labeled water (DLW) method. In 1989 he set up a stable isotope laboratory at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center and was a faculty member for 16 years. In 2005 he was recruited by Dr. David Kelly to the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh to expand stable isotope capabilities. A major focus is his NIH-funded project applying PET/CT imaging to determine the role of specific steps of glucose uptake and the contribution of muscle and adipose tissue in the lower peripheral glucose uptake in African American women. He is also examining the role of mitochondrial function in racial differences in metabolic rate, aerobic fitness and glucose uptake. In another NIH-funded project he is employing DLW, indirect calorimetry, activity monitors, and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry to examine the role of energy balance in the increased obesity associated with the recently identified CREBRF missense variant in Samoans. Dr. DeLany has published over 105 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts. He has also served on several NIH grant review panels and serves on the ADA Research Grant Review Committee.
