abstract

  • Medication is usually the first option of choice for treatment of anxiety and depression. However, the emerging body of evidenced-based research on lifestyle measures to prevent or treat anxiety and depression deserves consideration in all patients. Ways that pharmacists can support lifestyle modification for individuals with anxiety or depressive disorders include the use of screening tools, counseling using open-ended interview techniques, and being aware of reasons people are seeking over-the-counter self-care. Ensuring safe use of prescribed medications and avoiding alcohol or other negatively interacting supplements are other ways. Objective counseling on quantities/amounts of exercise and proper nutrition and smoking cessation should also be included. Finally, encouraging a healthy environment and outlook is in order. Because mental health disorders affect every aspect of an individual's life, whole-person health measures are vital for overall success.
